Mappin Bros. Coromandel Vanity Dressing Box with Accessories. 1890

A fine quality Coromandel dressing box retailed by Mappin Brothers of Regent St. This was one of the forerunners of the world famous Mappin and Webb and a prestigious London retailer for cutlery made in Sheffield and other luxury goods.

The box is veneered in exotic coromandel with brass edging and round plaque on the lid.    Opening the lid of the box it first reveals twelve cut glass jars with beautifully engraved silver plated lids, a lift out tray revealing a storage well and a removable mirror concealing a secret letter/stationary pouch. There is a tray full of mother of pearl vanity/manicure tools that lifts out to reveal a lined well containing further miscellaneous tools. To the front of the box there is a spring released hidden bottom drawer with partitions for jewellery and a watch, opened by an inside button.
