Impressive Italian Alabaster Figure of a Maiden Seated on a Bench by P. Emilio Fiaschi, Italian, C. 1910
A Magnificent Italian Alabaster Figure of a nude maiden seated on an antique bench by Emilio Fiaschi.
She casually sits crossed legged wearing only gladiator sandals and a robe draped over one arm, gazing towards the floor. Her arms rest softly on the back of the bench.
We notice on the seat and the back of the bench decorated with sun and cherubs, along a chiseled frieze High quality of carving especially in the features of the face, the hands, the feet.
P. Emilio Fiaschi (1858 – 1941) Fiaschi was one of a group of highly skilled marble sculptors working in Florence in the late 19th century. Concentrating on genre themes and the nude, Fiaschi produced marble editions with great consistency of quality. In the present marble Fiaschi skillfully emphasises the female form by accentuating the waistline, while the coarse architectural fragment draws attention to the soft polish of the skin. Fiaschi studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence between 1883 and 1885 and won a medal at an art competition in his presumed hometown Volterra in 1890
